Sam Horning is a dancer, performance maker, facilitator, and community engaged artist currently stationed in Washington, DC and holds a post as the Resident Artist and Programs Manager at Dance Exchange. He believes wholeheartedly in Dance Exchange’s mission that every body can and should dance. His work is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and he is a recipient of their FY18 Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program.

Some highlights of Sam’s eclectic career include performances and engagements with Liz Lerman, Dance Exchange, Biba Bell, BodyCartography Project, Leyya Tawil/DANCE ELIXIR, Stefanos Tsivopoulos, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, RebollarDance, Sarah Gamblin and Matthew Cumbie, The Michigan Opera Theatre, Patricia Mullaney-Loss, Bowen-McCauley Dance, Ron de Jesus, Mountain Empire Dance Collective, ArtlabJ, Agora Dance, The Michigan Dance Project, and an iteration of Nick Cave’s Here Hear with choreography by Biba Bell. Sam is the project lead and collaborator for Matthew Cumbie’s Growing Our Own Gardens, an intergenerational performance project that brings people together across age and difference to surface and celebrate the stories, struggles, and possibilities of queer communities.

With an interest in the ways place and space influence the human condition, Sam has had the honor of performing in several spaces and places, most notably The White House (Washington, DC), The Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Asheville, NC), Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa (Warsaw, PL), Sogang University (Seoul, SK), Dance Place (Washington, DC), The Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), The Joyce (New York City, NY), The Music Hall (Detroit, MI), The Detroit Opera House (Detroit, MI), The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (Detroit, MI) and Dequindre Cut (Detroit, MI). He has also performed in several public and private spaces including parks, domestic spaces, studios, streets, and in front of many cameras.

As a magna cum laude graduate from Wayne State University in 2015, Sam holds a BFA in Dance. Throughout his undergraduate experience, he had the pleasure of studying with Biba Bell, Meg Paul, Jeffrey Rebudal, Ariel Osterweis, Nicholas Leichter, Sean Hoskins, Addison O’Day and other WSU faculty whom have greatly influenced his artistic practices. Sam was the personal assistant to the Associate Professor and Area Head–Dance, Jeffrey Rebudal and the President of WSU Dance Workshop during his senior year. Sam’s works Friday Night and The Welcome Mat were presented at the American College Dance Festival in 2015.
